3rd Annual Cesar E. Chavez Memorial 5k Run/Walk-a-Thon
Thermal, CA, Saturday the 27th of March 2010 – Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA) de Desert Mirage High School (DMHS) will be hosting the 3rd Annual Cesar E. Chavez Memorial 5k Run/Walk-a-Thon. Proceeds go towards scholarships for students whose parents are farmworkers and/or are AB 540. Many of the students of the Eastern Coachella Valley lack monetary resources to attend a four year university. Due to their parents inability to afford spending on anything other their on survival needs; many students, who can and would like to attend college or a university, can not. Therefore, three years ago, the Cesar E. Chavez Memorial 5k Run/Walk-a-Thon was created to assist students in pursuing their dreams. As Chavez asserted,
"It is not enough to teach our young people to be successful...so they can realize their ambitions, so they can earn good livings, so they can accumulate the material things that this society bestows…it is not enough to progress as individuals while our friends and neighbors are left behind" (Chavez).
MEChA de DMHS has attempted to empower themselves and strive to better themselves, but also they have felt the need to assist out their fellow neighbors that so desperately need the help too.
